Woman with Albinism Calls out Bullies
Ayoung woman has finally decided to open up regarding the bullying she has faced in life because of a genetic condition.
Laisa Bulatale, has albinism, a condition which deprives her skin, eyes and hair of melanin, a dark brown to black pigment which gives colour to our eyes, skin and hair.
Over the weekend, she posted up a video calling out people who continue to stigmatise Fijians who suffer from the disorder.
Ms Bulatale pointed out that she just felt the need to share this part of her life that many persons living with albinism in this country don’t really share.
“Being bullied for being you is not cool,” she said.
Living with albinism is very hard. For many years she and others like her continue to face the issues of bullying, harassment and teasing from people that couldn’t simply accept the fact the way she looks like.
She has even questioned God for her very existence.
“I have questioned God many times, why would you make me like this, so just that people could bully and say things that’s hurtful to me.” This has not deterred some to speak out on social media against the ill-will that has happened to her.
“God bless my sister’s heart, for passionately defending me, on many occasions she would stand up for me,” said one person.
“I owe her a lot of appreciation.” The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has denounced the actions of people who continue to portray such behaviours against persons that have albinism.
