Lifters compete in Fiji Day champs
Weightlifters from five clubs will take part in the Fiji Day Championships at the National Fitness Centre tomorrow.
Clubs that have confirmed their participation are Dogowale, Makosoi, Kadavu, Suva and the newly established Namosi club. Competitions will thereafter continue on a monthly basis in preparation for the 2020 Oceania Championships in April in Nauru, as well as other International competitions.
Meanwhile, Weightlifting Fiji (WF) is continuing on its goals to grow the sport around the country.
WF’s partnership with the Fiji National Sports Commission’s (FNSC) community outreach programme has once again resulted in the establishment of new training centre in Namosi.
WF has now established the Southern Weightlifting Club in Kadavu, the Dogowale and Makosoi clubs in the Serua and now the Namosi club.
This brings to a total of 6 registered weightlifting centers around Fiji, including Labasa and Suva clubs.
The outreach programmes are showing a lot of promise in talent identification and there are some potential athletes who have exceptional raw talent.
WF’s incoming general secretary, Della Shaw-Elder said: “I get to see first-hand new athletes who have never tried the sport but they have the right mechanics to be able to go far in the sport.”
Weightlifting Fiji will continue its Talent Identification Programmes, its development programmes and coach development programmes with the support of Government through the FNSC and the Oceania Sports Education Programme.
