Plans Underway to Install Solar Street Lights in Labasa
Plans to install solar street lights in Labasa are underway after the High Commissioner of India, Padmaja made a courtesy visit to the administrator of the Labasa Town Council on Friday.
Mrs Padmaja discussed courses of study with the officers to enhance their knowledge and skills that would be taken care of by the Government of India.
She explained one of the courses offered was on solar energy from a prestigious university in India. “We have just discussed the twin cities concept and the government of the day is keen on this kind of relationship as well as you’re all enthusiastic about it,” Mrs Padmaja said.
There were also plans to improve the front of the Labasa Civic Centre into a picnic-like spot where people could enjoy their time with their families.
Local administrator Ami Kohli said: “We can put the solar lights across the park, near the market where people can make some food during the night and have dinner.” Fascinated with the idea Mrs Padmaja said: “Fiji is really blessed with beautiful sunlight and abundance of water. We need to tap on these resources as they are sources of renewable energy. Meanwhile, the High Commissioner of India said one thing she loved about Fiji was the language. despite different origins of their forefathers from South India, Punjab or Gujerat, they spoke a common Hindi language.
“Fiji is always near the heart of all the Indians, including the predecessor of the current minister, Sushma Suraj, therefore she chose Fiji to host the International World Hindi Conference in 2020,” Mrs Padmaja said.
