Forty year-old Maikeli Sogari Maria was a happy man after he received a new wheelchair from the Rotary Club of Labasa on Monday.

His uncle, Viliame Jiuta said he contacted Rotary Club regarding his nephew’s situation and was thankful to Ami Kohli who facilitated the wheelchair donation. “My nephew had been using my office chair for three weeks now to help him move around the house,”

Mr Jiuta said.

“We’re very grateful to the Rotary Club for their kind donation,” he said. President John Prasad said that the club was eager to help as it was a genuine case. “Our motto, Service Above Self and giving back to our local community is what Rotary does, as the focus is to always help others with what we are blessed with,” Mr Prasad said.

“The smile on Maikeli’s face when he first sat on the wheelchair was one of the gratitude and joy that we live for. “This is an ongoing project and there are 15 more wheelchairs that we are willing to donate to people who need them and we

will try and assist them after our assessment,” he said.

Mr Maria was involved in a car accident early September at Navakasiga because of an engine failure.

“This is a big help from the Rotary Club of Labasa as it will help me recover quickly. Now I will be able to move around the house on my own and my arms can get some exercise too,” Mr Maria said.

“I am sure nothing is impossible for me now to help me get better and be able to walk again,” he said.
