Eighteen boxers, who will take part in the South Pacific Boxing Promotions in Nadi on Saturday, have reason to smile. This was after they received new boxing gear from United States-based Mohammed Sadiq in Nadi yesterday.

South Pacific Boxing Promotions promoter Freddy Chand received over $1000 worth of gear.

Sadiq reminded the organisers and the boxers on their roles towards developing the sport.

“We have boxing at heart and we are assisting young men and women succeed in the sport. We have to give these boxers a best chance and guide them through,” Sadiq said.

“Most of the time we only use the boxers but we forget to prepare them for the future.”

Chand acknowledged the support from their counterparts in the USA.

“Before we only had two pair of gloves. I have my own but I always help other boxers as we look out for one another,” he said.

“Now that we have these new gloves, the future looks bright and I’m thankful for that. “Frederick Chand, 18, of Seaside Boxing Club is looking forward to his debut against Meshack Chand of Happy Gloves Club. They will be fighting in the 66.6 kg category over four rounds.

Frederick is a Year 12 student of AD Patel College of Ba and is the son of promoter Chand.

“I am looking forward to my debut fight which I have been waiting for some time,” he said. Meshack is a student of Tilak High School of Lautoka.

Meanwhile, the event is supported by KK’s Hardware, Grand Pacific Hotel, Shams Halal Meat, Sunrise Battery and Johns Dairy Shop.
