Commissioner reminds Police to remember meaning of Diwali
Brigadier-General Qiliho highlights frustration of Police over slain officer, but encourages them not to lose heart
Slain Police officer Siuta Niumataiwalu was on the mind of many members of the Fiji Police Force as they vowed to reflect the meaning of the festival of lights – the triumph of good over evil.
Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said it had been a sad and dark week for the institution. He said while many expressed anger and frustration over the loss of Constable Niumataiwalu’s life, officers had to remain focused on their oath to protect and serve. “While the nation will be filled with Lights and our Hindu brothers and sisters celebrate the Festival of lights, for the past week we have mourned as a policing family over the tragic demise of our fallen comrade, a victim of a senseless crime,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.
“Many of us were angry and could not accept the news of why a young and promising life was taken away so early. However, we must find a place in our hearts and remember the meaning of Diwali, in that light will always triumph over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil”.
The Police Commissioner urged the officers to appreciate life and value the contributions of their comrades. “Conveying Diwali greetings to near and dear ones with Happy Diwali Messages is also an important aspect of Diwali. And as we reflect on a week that has been full of unexpected events, I ask that you not wait for a special occasion to express your appreciation to your comrades for their hard work as it could be your only opportunity to do so.”
Civil society body Ignite4Change Co-ordinator Broderick Mervyn and his team sent their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Constable Niumataiwalu. “We all know that we have to do much more to respond to the cries for justice for youth, women and children who have suffered violence. We have to do much more to end these horrible abuses and the impunity that allows these human rights violations to continue,” he said.
