Laqere Market completed, more projects planned for Nasinu
Residents within the heavily populated Nasinu municipality are eagerly looking forward to the official opening of the completed Laqere Market and other projects earmarked for the Nakasi-Nasinu corridor. Yesterday the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar said the market was completed and she was awaiting the date when the Prime Minister would be available to open the market.
Ms Kumar said the next project was the construction of a swimming pool which was at the conception and planning stage.
The third project for Nasinu is the Nakasi Municipal Market.
“The area identified is at the back of RB Patel. First a demand survey will be conducted to establish how many people we can house in the Nakasi Market,” she said.
“Then it also requires the transfer of land, planning, designing, land preparation and then the construction phase.
“In Nakasi, there will also be a children’s park. The next stage is the implementation of works that has been designed and passed.”
Ms Kumar said such projects took time.
“As we collect revenue we then plough it into different projects,” she said.
“In the past money was given to municipal councils to complete a project; however they were not able to do it within that allocated time.
In some cases there has been a budget reduction because councils are only given the portion that they can use for that financial year.
The ministry does not want the money to be tied up in the council’s bank account when it could be used for other activities.
