Fourteen-year-old Tanisha Diksha Kumar has never regretted foregoing her access to social media and devoting more time into her studies.

The Year 9 student of Labasa College was awarded the highest mark achiever for the 2018 Fiji Eighth Year Exam at Bulileka Primary School.

She also bagged the highest scorer for the Northern Division, scoring a total mark of 585 out of 600. She said that she was inspired by her parents who encouraged her and motivated her to keep striving for the best in life. Preferring Maths and English as her favourite subjects she aspires to become a doctor.

Her parents who are secondary school teachers were proud of their only daughter for her achievements.

Ajendra Kumar said his daughter had sacrificed her time by waking up early in the morning to study and also late at night. Mother, Raksha Kumar said the teachers were also helpful and had made an immense contribution in moulding her daughter to become a successful student.

Bulileka Primary School’s Yash Aryan Chand walked away with the dux award during their prizegiving ceremony on Wednesday. Proud father, Ashwin Vikash Chand, the Vice-Principal of Waiqele College, said it was a proud moment for his extended family as they all gathered to celebrate his son’s achievements.

“Yash is a very obedient and respectful child, these are some of the qualities that has led to his success,” Mr Chand said.

“He is also respectful to his elders, especially his grandparents who gave him their blessings.

“He is a very reliable person and I believe that with these qualities he would become a great leader in future.

“I would like to acknowledge my wife for paying close attention and monitoring his studies,” he said. Meanwhile, Yash’s mother thanked all the teachers who taught her son.

The aspiring software engineer wishes to continue his studies at Labasa College focusing on science subjects.

The young dux wishes to encourage young people to study and work hard in order to achieve their goals. The prizegiving ceremony’s chief guest, chief executive officer for Consumer Council of Fiji, Seema Nareeta Shandil said in her key note address that motivated parents teach their children to move away from primitive thinking of job seekers in order to become job creators.

“Teach your child to be an entrepreneur, artist, professional players or investor. Motivate your children to take challenges and explore opportunities,” Ms Shandil said. Mrs Shandil also urged everyone for their support to achieve the vision of “making Fiji an educated country with high literacy rate, by investing into our resources, our time and our efforts towards the education of our children”.
