Chiefs set tempo for franchise comp

The Aseri Buli captained- Koroba Chiefs retained the Vunivalu Cup after hammering Nadi Bay Sharks 34-5 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi on Saturday night.

This was the first round of the No.1 Currency/ Jack’s sponsored- Nadi Rugby Union franchise competitio­n. The Chiefs proved too strong as they scored six tries through winger Sireli Driu, Etuate Susu (2), centre Vilive Aria and Epeli Saukuru (2). Saukuru managed to convert two of the tries while Isaia Vuki scored Sharks lone try right on full-time.

Chief captain, Buli said despite big win they were tested in all areas of play. “Our boys did play to the best and we’ve set the tempo high for the next round of this franchise competitio­n.” Sharks captain Veni Malimali said they’ve learnt from the loss and will go into the second round a different side altogether.

In a major upset Coastal Herons edged out defending champions Bonunaqwel­e Jets 14-12.

Herons tries were scored by centre Joseva Naivalu and lock Inoke Masibalavu with Marika Momo kicking over the conversion­s.

The Jets managed a try to halfback Nogi Takashi which was converted by Tevita Taga while Sitiveni Serutabua’s try was not converted. Franchise coordinato­r Viliame Serutabua said they had watched some physical encounter and are expecting more close matches in round two.

It was disappoint­ment that Rukuruku Highlander­s failed to turn up and the match was awarded to Betorurau Giant. The NRU executives are meeting today to look into the issue.
