Concerns Over Frequent Garbage Trucks Breakdown
The frequent breakdown of garbage trucks in Lautoka has raised eyebrows for residents as some of the trucks were recently handed over to the City Council. Lautoka Ratepayers Association President, Narayan Reddy, highlighted this during a meeting between the Lautoka and Ba Board of Special Administrators, Lautoka City Council and members of the Lautoka Ratepayers Association on December 11. “Our main issue is the use of normal trucks because the garbage trucks are breaking down every week, at the moment three have broken down and then they have the MPT (multipurpose trucks) and also they hire one that costs the council $48 an hour,” he said. Mr Reddy said other issues discussed were the laxity of repair works, debri clearance from drains near the Lautoka City Council office, road conditions, the condition of Churchill Park, and juice sellers at the market occupying taxi base selling cigarette rolls.
Lautoka and Ba board of special administrators acting chairperson Beatrice Nast said issues would be addressed according to priority.
“There’s a new garbage truck which we just received and at the moment there are two garbage trucks from China that are not working at the moment so we are looking into maybe one more new truck if it’s too expensive to fix the others,” she said.
Ms Nast said there would also be discussions to ensure garbage collectors placed rubbish bins properly in residential homes after emptying the trash.
