Police Strict on After Hours Liquor Sales

- ASHNA KUMAR SUVA Edited by Ivamere Nataro

The Fiji Police Force will not condone shops selling liquor after hours, says Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho.

With their festive operations underway, Brigadier-General Qiliho said they would make recommendations to the liquor licensing board to revoke liquor licences of those who continued to abuse them.

Visiting Court Premises:

Brigadier-General Qiliho made an unannounced visit to the Court premises yesterday and spoke to some of the remanded prisoners at the holding cell block. He said he visited his Police officers who were deployed to the Courthouse.

“I visited because in the past we’ve had a few escapes, which we take seriously. Things at the cell have been done well by the Judicial Department and we are happy with the way things are.

“I came and inspected that again and certainly there has been damages in there by the remand prisoners. “Also, how we get them from the Corrections facilities to here is something we have to look at especially during the busy periods of the morning.

“Even down to the food, I asked a few of the remand prisoners that were there. They are still human beings and they have to be looked after well.”

Brigadier-General Qiliho also advised the remand prisoner on how they could be better citizens

“They need help as well. It does not mean that they have done wrong that they are bad people. Some of them need a bit of guidance.

Alleged assault on Police officers at the courthouse:

Brigadier-General Qiliho said if there were incidents, the law would deal with whoever is responsible.

“We do investigations when things go wrong. The society has to look at that. “Every leader, starting from home, whether you are the eldest in the family or you are the parents, grandparents, traditional leaders in the village, religious leaders, we all have to play a part in that.

“Most of the time people look to the Police for charging young people for offences.” Brigadier-General Qiliho said the society also has a role to play in assisting the Police officers.
