Cummins spends new riches on dog toys

-

Melbourne: Pat Cummins became the most expensive overseas player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history last week but some new toys for his pet dog are the extent of his new shopping plans despite the sudden influx of riches.

The gun Australian paceman fetched AU$3.2 million from the Kolkata Knight Riders at last week’s IPL auction.

However, Australian coach Justin Langer said no amount of money would change Cummins, who is the No 1 ranked test bowler in the world.

“You could pay him a $100 million, you could pay him a $1 billion, it’s not going to change him,” Langer said on Tuesday.

“They’re the sort of people you want in your team.

“He just loves playing cricket, he’s an outstanding young bloke ... it’s not going to affect him.”

Cummins said he had been watching the IPL auction at home and was taken aback by what unfolded. “Just sitting at home. Found a stream of it and yeah, watched it. And couldn’t really believe what I was seeing,” Cummins said.

The quick said he wanted to remain grounded. “Yeah, I try my best not to change,” he said.

“I’m lucky I’ve got a really good group of people around me and the boys, obviously the team are great, but also family and friends. I still play cricket because I love it and love being around everyone and everything that comes with it. So yeah, just really fortunate and grateful for everything that’s happened but hopefully it doesn’t change me.”

As for the prospect of indulgent purchases, Cummins hadn’t given it much thought, leaving such matters to partner Becky.

“My girlfriend, the first thing she said was we can buy the dog a couple more toys now. So she’s got her priorities sorted,” Cummins said. The Age
