The Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty has announced his retirement effective today.

Mr Chetty said he truly enjoyed working for SCGC for the past 26 years in different positions and as the CEO for the past 11 consecutive years.

Appreciation

He sincerely thanked the Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar, Voreqe Bainimarama, the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Yogesh Karan, Ministry of Sugar officials and all the stakeholders for the co-operation, support and guidance given to him during his tenure as the CEO of SCGC.

“I sincerely appreciate the support rendered to me during my term of employment.

“The stimulation of our positive corporate culture and the opportunities for promotion and professional advancement that I was given made me successfully serve the cane growers of our beloved nation,” he said.

“While I look forward to enjoying my retirement, I will surely miss being part of this prestigious organisation.”

Mr Chetty said the sugar industry would always remain close to his heart and he would endeavour to assist and serve the sugar industry whenever required.

“I will take a much needed rest and family time before deciding on my next move, however as a registered cane grower I will have to ensure that production level on my farm is increased.

“There has been tremendous Government support for the sugar industry over the years and I am optimistic that the support will continue for the long term sustainability of the industry. “Farmers definitely need help to ensure that their confidence does not erode. The industry will have to continue exploring for harvesting and transportation issues as the cost is very high especially delivering cane by road and the cheapest mode of delivery is rail. Therefore, investment in rail transportation system is very much needed to keep the cost down.

“While the Government support to form co-operatives and purchase mechanical harvesters has immensely assisted growers in flat land areas, solution has to be found for hilly terrains.”
