Students Moved To Stronger Dormitories
Forty boarding students of Richmond Methodist High School in Kadavu have been moved to two stronger dormitories in preparation for Category 1 Cyclone Tino.
School teacher Epeli Boteanakadavu said even though the sun was out yesterday and the wind was not strong they were not taking any chances.
The two dormitories and the teachers quarters were properly secured.
“We had learned a lot from Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016 and had prepared well,” he said.
“All school teachers and students were briefed on the approaching cyclone.”
He said the teachers were on a 24-hour watch and had been reminded that the safety of the students was their priority. Mr Boteanakadavu, who hails from Tavuki Village, said the youths were sleeping in their farm houses as from Monday but they had been told to return to the village.
Former school teacher Ruca Senitovu from Tavuki Village said all their houses were secured.
Matokana Village Ono-i-lau
Village headman, Josefa Nadavo, said they had secured all their houses.
Yesterday’s weather he said was not that bad so some villagers went fishing.
He said they had not seen any sign of a cyclone but had completed their preparation if things got worse.
Sawaieke, Gau
Village headman, Akariva Nabati, said they enjoyed the fine weather yesterday.
He said some old people in the village had reminded them of the “calm before the storm”.
All the houses he said were properly secured and families were told of their evacuation centre. He said they had been reminded to move to the centre before the cyclone.
Natauloa, Narai
Village spokesman, Malanivosa Colati, said the weather was fine yesterday but there was heavy rain on Thursday.
He said they had completed their preparation for Category 1
Cyclone Tino.
Meanwhile, the head teacher of Davetalevu Primary School, Nairai, Viliame Buatavatava said the students were released earlier to their homes because of the approaching cyclone.
Yaroi, Matuku
According to Aisake Cama they could see the sign of a cyclone. The sun was out yesterday and villagers went about their normal routine.
He said they had not received any warning but they had completed their preparation.
The other islands could not be reached yesterday.
