Authority develops fix for pedestrian lights at busy Samabula intersection
I hope working lights would get people to cross from the right place, says Donald Lal.
Asolution to fix the pedestrian lights at one of the busiest intersections in Suva is being developed.
The Fiji Roads Authority said work would start on the intersection lights at Edinburgh
Drive, Princes Road, Waimanu Road and Ratu Mara Road from Monday January 20, 2020, weather permitting.
“The maintenance work is targeted to repair the faulty pedestrian crossing control system at the intersection,” said FRA in a statement.
“During this time, there will be lane closures as and when required. Temporary Traffic Management will be deployed on site to assist motorists and pedestrians to maneuver safely.
“Motorists and pedestrians are requested to exercise extra caution and to follow the traffic management employed on site.” Samabula resident Leroy Brown said the pedestrian lights at the intersection near the Fiji National University (FNU) had not been working for a some time.
“I cannot recall how far back, but I am pretty sure the pedestrian lights have not worked for more than three years,” he said.
“It is a very important light. People cross there. The Calvary Temple and FNU gets a lot of pedestrian traffic. I think the light across Princes Road is also not working.”
Donald Lal, a taxi driver, based at the Samabula Post Office, said because of the lights not functioning, people were crossing from almost anywhere.
“Not only is this dangerous, but a nuisance for drivers. I hope the working lights would get people to cross from the right place,” he said.
Work is expected to start at 10am and end at 3pm to avoid peak hour traffic. FRA estimates that work will last three weeks.
