All boarders of Richmond Methodist High School in Kadavu have returned and began classes yesterday.

As a safety precaution all students were ordered to go to their respective homes as they began to feel strong winds and when an alert was out that Tropical Cyclone Tino was approaching.

Principal, Solomone Seruitamana Ratuloaloa, said the school had its natural disaster plan and they were about to activate it when the advice from the Ministry of Education was announced.

“All boarding students were taken to their homes by their parents and were back at the school,” he said.

“They all started classes yesterday.” Mr Ratuloaloa said they had their own plan for the safety of students in case of any natural disaster.

When students were taken home the teachers remained in the school to look after the school buildings, furniture, equipment and other property.

The school he said for this year had a roll of 180.

He said the serious damage at Richmond Methodist High School was to the farm that had been destroyed by strong winds.

“The school workers surveyed the damage in the farm yesterday and reported that their cassava plantation was totally destroyed,” he said.

“So from yesterday the school boarders were eating all food crops they managed to harvest before they go bad.” Mr Ratuloaloa said when he received the full survey report he would then know the full extent of damage.

“I had expected this so we are also prepared for it,” he said.

“In any natural disaster the safety of students is always paramount.”
