Residents raise concern of ‘Tibi’ Sellers

The illegal sale of loose cigarettes in Lami Town is being done openly raising the concern of some disgruntled residents.

The residents believe it is more than cigarettes that is being sold. This happens at the corner of Vetaia Street opposite the Total Service Station.

Gade, said he knew most of the young men involved in this and realised that they were trying to earn money for their families.

“Earning a living is fine but there are dangers here. I have seen children walk up to them and get cigarettes,” he said.

“I’ve also seen some of these guys dealing what I think is narcotics and it happens in broad daylight.” A taxi driver operating near Lami, Mosese Waqa said the ‘tibi’ sellers were smart.

“If they see Police or authorities come around, they move from the area very fast. And because they stay in Lami, they just move around, cross the road before they get caught out,” Mr Waqa said. “Some of them operate late in the evening.”

One of the so called ‘tibi’ sellers, who did not want to divulge his identity said they were merely making a living.

“The unemployed young men do this so they can support their families. I am sure people would be happier with us doing this rather than stealing or robbing,” he said.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said the Lami Town Council would look into this.

According to the law, the sale of loose cigarettes or rolls is prohibited and carried hefty fines.
