Fiji National University (FNU) student at Namaka Campus in Nadi, Ana Phillip, 22, hopes to reap her sacrifices and hard work when she graduates in three months. Originally from Vanua Levu with maternal link in Serua, she was brought up by her grandparents after her parents separated when she was just three.

“My parents supportme and I am grateful for that. I have faced many challenges, I was sick and was admitted to the hospital but I did not lose hope. I made use of every opportunity that I have in school to excel academically,” Ms Phillip said.

She is doing her major in Front Office Operation at FNU.

“I prefer FNU because we learn, do theory and also do practical. I thank my teachers for helping me.”

“I am looking forward for my graduation in May. I know the sacrifice of travelling early from Lautoka and studying late at nights will be soon paid off,” she said.

Meanwhile, Krtika Kumar Lata, a second year student who is doing a degree programme majoring in Commerce and Management said her greatest motivators were her parents and teachers.

“I am in the only one in the family to have reached university level. My parents and my teachers are my great motivators. I usually leave Ba at 5am and reach school around 8:30 or 9am,” Ms Kumar said.

English as Second Language (ESL) students, Gyoungsir Moon and Grace Hyerin Kim, are a couple from South Korea who are here to speak English better.

“We travelled around the world. We love to explore more on nature and one of the barriers we faced is language. The reason we came to Fiji is to learn English. We are hoping to go back with more knowledge of the language and build more connection with people around the world,” Mr Moon said.

“I love FNU and the people here are kind and very helpful especially my tutor. I will recommend this institution to all my friends in Korea because of the knowledge of good English we gain from here,” he said. Mr Moon is a computer programmer while Mrs Moon is a nurse. They will spend three and half months in Fiji to study ESL.

David Yuanhao Lu, 18, originally from Guangdong, China is studying English at FNU. He loves FNU because it is affordable and the tutors are helpful.
