People who were eager to use Albert Park in Suva for exercise routines were turned away on Monday afternoon following confusion on whether the park was open or not.

However, this confusion has now been cleared after the Suva City Council said it was available for use by the general public from 3pm on weekdays.

Suva City Council special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua had announced that the $16 million Albert Park would reopen from February.

However, SCC staff at the ground said it was still closed on Monday. Nilesh Singh a frequent user of the park said he was taken aback because media reports had been saying that the park would open. “We were simply told that the ground is closed. The staff said they were not aware of any reports in the media,” he said.

“I am happy that the SCC chief executive officer, Azam Khan, was so helpful and polite.”

Another Suva resident Amit Kumar said a lot of people were looking forward to the re-opening of Albert Park.

“I think almost a thousand people use the park on a daily basis. Albert Park is convenient and central to work so people play or exercise here and then go home,” he said. Mr Tikodudua said he realised what the park meant to some people and he was happy that the confusion surrounding the opening of the park was handled.

According to SCC, Albert Park will require a booking before 3pm. From 3pm, it is available for the public to use on weekdays, while usage in the weekend will be used for organised sports bookings.
