The son of a sugarcane farmer, Sanchay Kumar, was surprised to be inducted as the head boy yesterday of Tabia Sanatan Dharm Primary School in Labasa.

The 13-year-old of Tabia, Labasa, said his father, Sanjay Kumar, would be very proud of him.

“My father works very hard toiling the land every week,” Sanchay said. “I always plan to do something new to bring a smile on his face and this badge will be one of it.”

The youngest of two siblings said his ambition was to become a doctor so that he could have enough money to look after his parents and improve their living conditions.

His eldest sister is a Year 10 student at Tabia Sanatan College.

“I would like to thank the teachers for choosing me,” Sanchay said. As head boy, he will work together with 64 prefects from Kindergarten to Year Eight to make sure everything is in order.

For newly-inducted head girl Pritansha Chand, being named to lead the school prefects and students also came as surprise.

“There are so many talented students in Year Eight that I didn’t even think I would be given this badge,” said Pritansha, who hails fromTabia, Labasa.

“I wish to become a lawyer in the future to help people find justice. “There are many corrupt practices in Fiji that needs to come to an end.” The school has a roll of 358 students and 20 teachers.
