LAISEANA NASIGA

He was a very humble and bubbly man who enjoyed life

These were the words used to describe the late Goundar Shipping Limited co-founder and operations manager Joseph Michael Pugan.

Mr Pugan, 74 years old, passed away on January 29, 2020 at his residence in Samabula. Company managing director George Goundar said his uncle was by his side when his shipping business started.

“When I started the company in 2010, he was the first person I got in touch with and he knew the business very well.

“He grew up in the industry with my dad and a man like him is irreplaceable. “Whenever I am out of the country, he would manage the company.

“It showed the kind of person that he is, bubbly and always loved his beer and enjoyed life,” he said.

Mr Goundar added that in terms of running the business, the late Mr Pugan would make sure that the payments were always up to date.

Pugan’s impact to the business

“The company is successful because of him.

“We now have to re-assess and see who is going to be handling the accounts because that is one of the key areas in the industry. “He will be deeply missed amongst the staff because he got along really well with them.

“It’s a big blow for me as I have been relaxing all these years and now it’s time for me to pull up my sleeves, re-organise myself, and re-think how I will proceed forward.

“I will now have to get my elder sister involved in the business to help out as this is a family business,” he said.

Full of life

He further shared that even at 74-years-old, Mr Pugan still had his share of fun. “Whenever my brother comes into town, uncle Pugan is always at the nightclub with him and he loves his country music.

“He will be really missed,” said Mr Goundar.
