BAF fully equipped to counter Coronavirus
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) is working in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders and Government Ministries and agencies on all areas of concern in light of the “Novel Coronavirus” outbreak. International media have reported that the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus shows no signs of slowing, as China reported another major spike in both confirmed cases and deaths in the region at the heart of the epidemic. Acting chief executive officer Surend Pratap said: “BAF has fully informed and equipped its officers but at the moment is not issuing any special advisories to importers/exporters.
“The relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) and World Health Organisation (WHO)-Fiji office are providing information on precautionary measures and timely updates regarding the virus and its status in Fiji.
“At the moment imports to Fiji have not been affected and as mentioned earlier, BAF is working closely with the relevant stakeholders in consistently monitoring the situation. “BAF together with other border control agencies and the MOHMS have further strengthened inspection and clearance processes at all international ports of entry. “Our staff members have been equipped with additional essential personal protective equipment (PPE) allowing them to safely and effectively carry out their work. “Staff members are also being briefed with up-to-date situation analysis/information and stand ready to respond to required assistance by other agencies as and when the need arises,” Mr Pratap said.
