113 families look forward to construction of sustainable homes
The army engineers cleared up debris left by TC Winston, repaired the village foot crossing and constructed two farm roads.
The construction of houses for 113 families at Nasau Village will begin on April 14 this year.
Most families are still reeling from the destruction and aftermath of the 2016 Tropical Cyclone Winston which wiped out the whole village.
Nasau Rehabilitation Committee chairman Amena Yauvoli acknowledged the assistance rendered by the Government under the Help for Homes Initiative.
While briefing villagers and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on Wednesday, Mr Yauvoli said the committee aimed to rehabilitate villagers by building sustainable homes for the future.
“The committee has laid down a master plan to rehabilitate the yavusa (tribe). Our rehabilitation plan is not for one or two years it is a plan for many years to come so that we can improve people’s standard of living and the wellbeing of their families,” Mr Yauvoli said.
“Rehabilitation works will begin on April 14. We are deeply grateful to the Government for the assistance.”
The committee has engaged Clearview Architects Fiji that designed a two-bedroom plan endorsed by Erasito Consultants.
The two-bedroom house which cost $18,000 comes complete with a bathroom and toilet, kitchen and a dining area.
Villagers have agreed to pair up as syndicates and combine their $7000 assistance grant to make up $14,000, the remaining balance will be matched by villagers themselves.
Mr Yauvoli also thanked Mr Bainimarama for his swift response in mobilising engineering officers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to clean up Nasau Village after the cyclone.
“Nasau Village was littered with rubbish, cement blocks from the remains of houses that were damaged during the cyclone,” he said.
