2 schools damaged by TC Winston to be fully operational soon
Two schools on Koro Island that were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston will be fully operational soon.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed that Kade Village School and Nakodu Mudu Primary School would be completed soon.
“You - more than anyone - know the value of all-weather infrastructure,” Mr Bainimarama told Koro islanders on Wednesday. “Koro communities were among the first I visited in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston’s devastation in 2016. When I arrived, I cannot recall seeing a single leaf left on the tree,” he said.
“Koro’s schools were devastated. We look forward to the opening of the final two school’s government is rebuilding on Koro, the Kade Village School and the Nakodu Mudu Primary School.
“They are set to be completed in the coming weeks.”
He thanked the Australian Government for its assistance with rebuilding efforts on Koro.
“After Winston, whole sections of your roadways as well had been washed into the sea,” PM Bainimarama said. “Seeing this brandnew road in front of us today is remarkable.
“It speaks of the resilience of the people of Koro that you are emerging stronger from Winston’s devastation.
“And it speaks of the commitment by your Government that we’re helping build Koro back bigger and better than ever. “Whether it’s driving produce to the markets, traversing Koro in times of heavy rainfall, or unlocking new avenues of tourism, these new crossings pave the way to greater economic opportunity for every member of your communities.”
Koro Island was one of the worst affected by the category five TC Winston.
