Labasa boxer Krishnil Chand is honoured to step into the ring and fight stylish Suva super flyweight boxer Nathan ‘The Hornet’ Singh on February 29 at A.D Patel College ground in Ba.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Chand said, he was about to quit boxing and concentrate on his work as a joiner in furniture making, when he received a call from South Pacific Boxing Promotions.

“I’m proud that Nathan Singh, a very good boxer has seen me as a worthy opponent,” he said.

“I don’t want to make any predictions but I’ll try to take the fight to the distance.” Chand stepped in to fight Singh in a sixround fight after Rahul Aaron Kumar withdrew.

The Lajonia native outside Labasa trains at the Police Club and has five professional fights under his belt.

‘It will be a 54 kilogramme fight and already I’ve made that weight,” he added.

Labasa are renowned for producing top lightweight boxers like Sharamat Shah, Saven Chand, Gyan Kumar, Mohammed Arif and former Fiji bantamweight champion Bobby Rahamat Shah who was unbeaten in 43 pro fights.

SPBP promoter Freddy Chand said they are giving upcoming boxers like Chand and Singh a chance to show their worth.

“We are building them up and if you look at our posters, you’ll see a lot of new fighters,” he added.

Chand confirmed that posters are being distributed and this is a chance for Ba fans to come and watch some of the country’s upcoming boxers in action.

The town of Ba has been renowned for producing top boxers like Filimoni Naliva (Snr), Sakaraia Pe, Silio Tiko, Elo Rauga and so on. The biggest fight ever to be watched at Govind Park, Ba was on November 24, 1979 when Sakaraia Ve knocked out Australia’s light middleweight champion Hector Thompson in the 11th round.
