Impossible is nothing for Milika Turaga. Milika was named the head girl for the Fiji Vocational Technical Training Centre for Persons with Disabilities in Suva on Friday.

She was chosen among 23 other prefects to lead the vocational institution.

Milika has never considered her disability as a deterrent from achieving great things in life.

She excels in both the academic and sporting arenas.

The Tovulailai, Nairai, Lomaiviti lass won bronze for Fiji at the Abu Dhabi 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dubai.

Her mother Sala Turaga was over the moon with her daughter’s achievement. She described Milika’s journey as one that was full of struggles and hardship.

“Milika was diagnosed with a rare condition at birth and that had slowed down her nervous system and the time she took to process what someone tells her to do,” Mrs Turaga said.

“For a person living with a rare condition of disability, Milika did not really grow up in a welcoming environment. There were people who would look down on her and would not even consider her if she was around.

“Despite that, Milika worked hard to make a name for herself. She excelled well academically and she performed well in the sporting arena.” Milika said she was happy with the appointment and hoped to do her ultimate best in upholding discipline at the center.

Head boy Vilimone Baleinayau said he was grateful to be tasked with leading the prefect body.

“I thank the Lord for his provisions and for allowing me to assist in leading the school’s prefect body this year,” Vilimone said.

“I thank my guardians for being so supportive as without them I would not have been able to be here today, let alone being in a leadership position at the center.

“I will do my best to serve to the best of my ability.”

Deputy head prefects were Sosiceni Raqio and Aiteri Daulali.

The vocational center offers first hand training to 55 students with special needs.

The center has six classes, which include clothing and textile, carpentry and joinery, office management, agriculture, sheltered workshop and food and nutrition.
