MAINTAINING INTEGRITY

-

One of the Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho’s great qualities is ensuring that the Police act with integrity in everything they do. He leaves no stone unturned.

He is currently investigating why two police officers were acting like security guards at a shop in Suva as reported by BTL. The officers should have been on the beat not directing shoppers in and out of the shop.

There is no doubt they could face disciplinary action if they have no plausible explanation on what they were doing in the shop premises.

KINDY OPENING

The controversial Lokia Kindergarten is likely to be opened on February 24 by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

It is hoped that by then all the compliance requirements will have been complied with.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management and Meteorological Services, Waterways and Environment Mahendra Reddy gave some words of wisdom last night.

He was the chief guest at the Brahma Kumari Meditation Centre session on the values and good teachings on Lord Shiva’s day. He said Maha Shivaratri was a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of Lord Shiva, and in particular, marks the day of the consummation of marriage of Shiva. He also advised people to respect their parents and for people to meditate everyday to impart good deeds for themselves.

Mr Reddy said it was a major festival in Hinduism, and this festival was solemn and marked a remembrance of “overcoming darkness and ignorance” in life and the world.

SPOTLIGHT ON BRANCH

A branch of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations is under the spotlight after new claims emerge about a business outlet in a small town.

After reading the BTL over the past two days, a former worker said he had lodged a complaint against the company three years ago regarding alleged breaches and violation of the employment law, but nothing had happened.

The ministry needs to clarify the situation to clear its name. Otherwise it would give rise to speculations.

TEACHERS AND MEDIA

Some teachers need to have a crash course on how to deal with the media.

They are only friendly to the media when they seek coverage on prefects induction, prize giving or donations of their sporting kitsfrom their sponsors to get their mileage.

But when it comes to covering their inter-house athletics competition they refuse to be interviewed and even threaten to chase the photographers.

Even when reporters call and get the approval of the Permanent Secretary, they still even refuse. Shame on them.
