Costin works on discipline
The Kaiviti Silktails rugby league team are focusing on minimising penalties that can prove costly during the New South Wales (NSW) Cup’s Ron Massey Cup competition.
The Silktails had a warm-up match against the Vodafone Cup East selection side at Bidesi Park in Suva, on Saturday.
Vodafone Fijian Bati head coach Brandon Costin while closely monitoring the team’s performance said they have to cut down on their penalty count.
“It’s the very first game so since they’ve come from the Vodafone Cup competition we’ve trying to instil a different style of rugby league into them especially in understanding the game,” he said.
“We got to be more focused in every single play and not just reacting to play after play. To be a good rugby league team you got to be thinking like a chess player, two or three moves ahead so that is what we are trying to instil to this team.”
Costin said they’ve got two trial games so he is expecting a lot of improvement especially around the discipline stuff like giving away penalties and high tackles.
He added the team have adopted techniques and the style of rugby league that is needed at that level.
“We are really talking about the numbers and spacing, utilising opportunities and trying to get small percentage of areas in the game where we have an advantage over the opposition,” he said
“I believe they are grasping it very well. I think their fitness and their strength is showing up amongst the other Vodafone Cup boys. There are other good players on the other side that are playing very well.”
The Silktails have two more warm-up games against Nadi Aviators, this week.
