More people have been arrested for breaching curfew hours around the country. Forty-nine people were arrested on Tuesday night for breaching curfew hours from 10pm.

Arrests made are listed below:

■ Western Division 18; ■ Southern Division 12; ■ Eastern Division 10; ■ Northern Division 5; and ■ Central Division 4 Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said the majority of those arrested were found loitering in public places while some continued to move around without any proper documentation or authorisation from their employers. On Monday, when the curfew came into effect, 68 people were arrested.

Yesterday, Brigadier-General Qiliho directed his officers to arrest people found loitering in public places during the nationwide curfew hours. “People are continuing to gather in numbers and are not adhering to physical distancing measures, particularly in public places,” he said.

With the announcement of the extension of the school holidays for another two weeks, Brigadier-General Qiliho has urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children were at home, and not loitering around places where they should not be.

“We must continue to take all necessary precautionary measures and I reiterate the words of the Prime Minister, where he stated that every person in Fiji should act as if anyone, anywhere could be a carrier of the virus, and for everyone to recognise that they have a role to play in defeating this virus for good,” he said.

Meanwhile, two drones have been acquired by the Fiji Police Force, in a bid to enhance service delivery through the use of technology.

The drones procured from Drones Services Fiji were handed over to BrigadierGeneral Qiliho, who said the timing could not have been better considering the need to have more eyes on the ground during the COVID-19 pandemic and routine Police operations.

Meanwhile, two people who were arrested on Monday for breaching curfew hours will appear in the Labasa Magistrates Court today.

Police said the men were arrested for loitering in Labasa and the excuses they provided were not justifiable.
