Nadroga rugby fans will be first to the grounds after the lockdown period
The wait can be a little bit longer for rugby and sports lovers in the rugby town of Nadroga.
While some of the major grounds escaped major damage from Cyclone Harold, Lawaqa park faced the brutal wrath of the tropical cyclone. Sun sports visited Lawaqa park earlier this week and found out that it was the worst-facility to be hit by TC Harold.
Lawaqa Park hosted the Fijian Drua’s final regular season match in the 2019 Australian National Rugby Championship and regularly hosts local rugby, football and netball matches.
Fiji Sports Council Operation Manager John Pickering said he was informed of the damage to their Sigatoka facility in a phone call last week but they will be unable to begin repairs until the national lockdown is completed
Now that the lockdown period is over the question is has the ground been assessed or not.
At Lawaqa Park a whole fence fell to the ground. There was also damage, slight damage to one of the authorities vehicles that was parked in Lawaqa Park.
We understand that we are facing something that is bigger than just a sporting facility; one should know that everything comes to an end at point in time.
These pandemic will soon be forgotten with memories that some will cherish but for the people of Nadroga heading back to the famous Lawaqa park will be one of the many things they will want to do.
Lawaqa Park is about a 70 minute drive south from Nadi and is the only park that caters for domestic rugby champions Nadroga. The park hosts more than 40 teams during the club games week in and week out.

Once the virus leaves our shores and everything gets back to normal, it will be certain that people from Nadroga will head to Lawaqa park on the first Saturday to play the sport that they hold close to their heart rugby

The Fiji Sports Council closed its facilities three weeks ago, in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 Advisory, and keep the doors shut until told otherwise.
