100 families assisted with food rations
LAISEANA NASIGA
One hundred families that were left unemployed as a direct impact of COVID-19 were assisted with a month’s worth of grocery items. These were families within Lami, Suva and Nasinu areas who were casual workers and doing odd work and weren’t eligible for Fiji National Provident Fund assistance.
Outreach campaign
This followed an outreach campaign organised by the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOS) on coronavirus (COVID-19) risk awareness
The awareness was carried out in their respective District Council of Social Services (DCOSS) in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
FCOS executive director Vani Cokanasiga said their food and security was a major concern highlighted from this outreach.
“As there were restrictions on movements, people were not able to go and buy groceries.
“They also had issues with inconsistent supply of water in the area when people are being advised to wash their hands daily under running water,” she said. From these findings, Global compassion, a charitable arm of the Christian Mission Fellowship International (CMFI) Church collaborated with FCOS.
Global compassion
In statement by Global Compassion it said: “In response to the pressing need identified at this time, the founder and President of CMFI, who is also the Senior Pastor of the World Harvest Centre Rev. Suliasi Kurulo authorised the activation of Global Compassion to offer immediate assistance through the donation of 100 boxes of food ration.
Each box contained essential items such as four kilos of flour, four kilos of sugar, four kilos of rice, two kilos of dhal (split peas) and 750ml cooking oil.Distribution was carried out by FCOS.
