NatureFiji-MareqetiViti, director Nunia Moko has urged everyone on this International Mother Earth Day to use their five senses to reconnect with nature. With the countries across the globe grappling with the impact of COVID-19, this suggestion should not be too hard to do.

Ms Moko said the Earth, through the gift of nature, has been taking good care of us.

“Observe the birds, listen to their song and see how they behave. While we still can, make use of our five senses to reconnect with nature, it is a truly peaceful experience,” she said.

Ms Moko said for NatureFijiMareqetiViti, every day is Mother Earth Day.

She said looking after Fiji’s biodiversity was at the heart of their existence. Their mission was to conserve and restore Fiji’s biodiversity and its habitat.

“This is by working together with local communities and partners to value and steward their natural resources,” she said. is Climate in Fiji (Fiji Petrel, Fiji Flying Fox, Fiji Sago Palm, Navua Palm, Redthroated Lorikeet, Yaqaga Crested Iguana, Collared Petrel, Yanita, Drautabua).

Over the past few weeks, she said they had been communicating on their website, Facebook page, national television and radio about Fiji’s endangered species.

“This particularly our forest-based species and the important role that forests play for our daily lives. “There are many creatures in our backyard and in our own homes that we take for granted.”

She said: “On Earth Day 2020, we want to create awareness about how nature is all around us even in our own homes, and how our actions impact them.”

Mrs Moko said the aim of the programme was to get children and their parents out exploring Fiji’s wildlife.

“It is a fun event whereby some of our very own local scientists take interested children and their parents on a journey through their topic of interest - birds, frogs, moths, and creatures in the mangroves, rivers and even plants.”

Established in 2007, NatureFijiMareqetiViti is Fiji’s only domestic Non-Government Organisation working solely for the conservation and sustainable management of Fiji’s unique natural heritage.

It aims to generate enthusiasm and local expertise in all matters associated with wildlife conservation and management through raising the level of conservation and environmental awareness and education.
