Fijian football captain Roy Krishna admitted COVID-19 pandemic had affected his career but has not made any decision on joining any club soon. Playing and captaining the ATK club in India, he was approached several times by Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs in the United States.

“I haven’t signed any contracts with any MLS club though I’ve been approached a couple of times,” he said in Ba yesterday.

“They have shown interest but at the moment with the uncertainty due to COVID-19 and football as well as other sports being on hold, I don't know when I would be signing up. At the moment everything is on hold,” he said.

“I haven’t made up my mind yet. The last time I had any discussions about my future contract was earlier in the year but due to the shutdown of sports around the world, I think I can take concrete actions after the borders open up and sports starts again,” he said. Krishna, alongside his wife, Naziah Ali, said. The COVID-19 pandemic had affected both their careers. He said although he was aware that the precautionary measures needed to be maintained, he missed being on the field.

“It has definitely put my future on hold and I'm missing out on being active on the field,” he added.

“I was travelling back home to join the national camp but that was cancelled. And following that, borders around the world started shutting down. I'm however able to use this time to relax and explore things I've always wanted to do like fishing and cooking. “My wife's business has been affected too because she runs a publishing company and the advertising dollars are the first to be cut for most businesses during such times so she has had to restrategise.

“Also for her cafe, she had to close up for a month due to social distancing and less people moving about. She's only just reopened this week.”

Experience in India

He said while being in India, he discovered a lot more about the culture and their diversity.

“Winning the India Soccer League (ISL) is an amazing experience especially being the captain of team. I only wish it was not played behind closed doors but I also understand the importance of keeping everyone safe,” he added.

“My favourite memory of the season would definitely be our home games, playing to our loving home fans especially in front of my family who came from Fiji to watch me play.”
