Culture of Violence
Dewan Chand, Suva
According to media reports, the Police have warned that some types of violence are on the increase. This is a clear indication that some people are unable to control their emotions under the current lockdown condition. Staying home with the family for long hours gets on to their nerves. Instead of dialogue and discussions, they resort to verbal abuse or physical violence. This is a sad reflection on our community.
Government has passed laws to ensure that we have violent-free homes. The environment in which women, children and the disadvantaged feel safe.
But genes of violence are so deep rooted in our society that it may be impossible to eradicate it.
Family structures need to be strengthened in which parents have to set the ideal behaviour of peace, love ,respect, share and care, learning to say sorry, thank you and following the values of truthfulness.
Once well grounded, the children will carry this in their adult life.
We also need to look at the role of our religious organisations, which seem to be failing.
Morality of pastors is important if they have to impact the society.
