Agroup of six men in the West are taking the Barter for Better Fiji by storm. The group posted its trading system on Monday.

The services in exchange for goodwill and groceries range from:

■ Indoors: Maintenance, clearance, painting, moving homes, light plumbing works

■ Outdoors: Grass cutting, farm preparation, backyard land cultivation, chicken shed construction, flower beds preparation, cutting, trimming and pruning of trees, firewood collection and fishing too

The men, who are currently unemployed because of the COVID-19 crisis, are hotel workers, Isoa Ratuva, 40, and Sikeli Naivunivuni, 33, Fiji Sugar Corporations staff members Ilaisa Gucake, 31, Maleli Mara, 37, Ravuama Madigi, 31, and Adriu Naisiroki, 34, who is a carpenter by trade.

With time on his hands, group leader, Mr Naisiroki said the idea was born when they got together to clean up each other’s homes.

With two members having expectant wives, Mr Naisiroki said there had never been a better time to be more innovative and motivated.

Mr Naisiroki, a part time taxi driver said they lived in Naidrodro, the Fiji Sugar Corporation compound and were available for those between Tavua and Lautoka.

“Once we completed our respective homes and then we thought why don’t we use our trade to assist the community at large?” he said.

“It is time to assist others in return for groceries and tools and it has gone really well with us.

“We are all family members and we love doing this.”

To kickstart their work, the group bartered fish in exchange for knives and forks for their outdoors trading. Yesterday, the group completed their sixth trade in Ba.
