COVID-19 recovered patient found home broken into, wife’s jewellery stolen

Imagine coming back home after more than a month in hospital quarantine and finding your home burgled.

If life had not already dealt Mohammed Imroz a bad card with COVID-19, another blow was awaiting him when he reached home after being discharged from Navua Hospital, last Sunday.

Mr Imroz, who was patient seven, found his house broken into. His wife’s jewellery and cash he had saved were taken from his home in Nabua Muslim League Estate, part of which had been under lockdown.

“I was discharged on Sunday May 3, and dropped off at home in Nabua in the

afternoon,” he said.

“When I entered our bedroom, I found the floor was broken. Someone had entered the room by breaking through the floor.”

Mr Imroz called the Police.

His house is in the centre of homes that were in the Nabua lockdown area. The lockdown was lifted a day before he returned home.

The money that was taken was for hard times and times could not be harder than now.

He was yet to receive his clearance to leave home and currently is not able to work.

The barber said there was stigma among people as he feared customers would be scared to come to him even when he was cleared.

He said since his return to his home, he had to struggle with food. He said he was grateful to have neighbours who thought of him and provided him with sustenance.

Biggest concern

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services brought him food supplies midweek. But his biggest concern now is getting life back on track.

With Mother’s Day on Sunday, he hopes to travel to Navua Hospital and take food and clothes for his wife, Afshana Arzu, and daughter, Fadilah Bi. The two are still active cases of COVID-19.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed a report was lodged. She said by that time Police had pulled out from guarding the area as the lockdown had been lifted on Saturday.
