Rains cause: landslide onto road, leave people stranded on both sides of bridge

Alandslide along Kings Road in Nabulini, Tailevu, resulted in its closure as the Fiji Roads Authority team tried to clear it.

In Tavua, the road was also closed because of flooding after the Nasivi River broke its banks resulting in forcing people to be stranded on both sides of the bridges until the water level receded.

Police in a statement said they monitored the movement of people as parts of the town area experience­d flash flooding. A statement from Police said: “Please stay safe and don’t attempt to cross flooded areas and ensure children are at home and not out playing in the rain or swimming.” Dubbed as Freaky Friday weather on social media, the weather yesterday was the result of heavy rain alert issued for many parts of active trough of low pressure.

It was associated with rain and showers lying just to the West of the Group and was gradually moving East.

Other flooded areas yesterday: • Nayavu station within the Wainibuka River

• Rakiraki Catchment, Naboutini to Navua, Veisari to Lami and Suva to Nausori • The water level recorded at Nasivi station was 5.04m at 10am which is 1.54m above warning level and increasing level at Vatukaceva­ceva station was 1.96m at 10am which is 0.46m above warning level and increasing

• Level at Rakiraki town station was 1.64m at 7am which is 0.14m above alert level and increasing. Level at Nayavu station was 5.21m at 7am which is 0.21m above alert level.
