Scholarships for Athletes, Officials
Beijing University of Sports will provide scholarships for athletes and officials, says Parveen Bala. The Minister for Youth and Sports firmed yesterday that
The Sports Ministry in China, communicated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on scholarship opportunities for our Fijian athletes and officials.
“This first phase of scholarship opportunity is called ‘Belt and Road International Champion Class Programme’ and is intended for players (athletes), active or retired, who have won first place in single or team events(s) in the Olympics, World Championships or World Cup or their coaches and who are nonChinese nationals,”he said.
The breakthrough came after Bala initiated the talks in his visit to China in December last year.
“During my visit, we met with Lunhao Xia, vice-president of Beijing Sports University (BSU),”he said.
“In our meeting at BSU, Xia announced that Fijian athletes and officials are welcome to study at Beijing Sports University, which is the top and finest sports university in China through its International Sports scholarship.
“The scholarships are offered in three categories, Bachelor, Masters and PhD level and students who are not fluent in Chinese will conbe sponsored to study Chinese for the initial year of studies (1st year). The Beijing Sports University (BSU) success has been attributed to its emphasis on research around the area of sports medicine and sports science.
This is the first of the many scholarships that the People’s Republic of China will be offering to Fijian athletes, officials and administrators.
