Scholarshi­ps for Athletes, Officials

Beijing University of Sports will provide scholarshi­ps for athletes and officials, says Parveen Bala. The Minister for Youth and Sports firmed yesterday that

The Sports Ministry in China, communicat­ed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on scholarshi­p opportunit­ies for our Fijian athletes and officials.

“This first phase of scholarshi­p opportunit­y is called ‘Belt and Road Internatio­nal Champion Class Programme’ and is intended for players (athletes), active or retired, who have won first place in single or team events(s) in the Olympics, World Championsh­ips or World Cup or their coaches and who are nonChinese nationals,”he said.

The breakthrou­gh came after Bala initiated the talks in his visit to China in December last year.

“During my visit, we met with Lunhao Xia, vice-president of Beijing Sports University (BSU),”he said.

“In our meeting at BSU, Xia announced that Fijian athletes and officials are welcome to study at Beijing Sports University, which is the top and finest sports university in China through its Internatio­nal Sports scholarshi­p.

“The scholarshi­ps are offered in three categories, Bachelor, Masters and PhD level and students who are not fluent in Chinese will conbe sponsored to study Chinese for the initial year of studies (1st year). The Beijing Sports University (BSU) success has been attributed to its emphasis on research around the area of sports medicine and sports science.

This is the first of the many scholarshi­ps that the People’s Republic of China will be offering to Fijian athletes, officials and administra­tors.
