Vollmer learning new trade

Eugene Vollmer has leaped into carpentry during the challenging times the world is going through.

The national triple jump champion and record holder (16.08metres) is learning something new to keep him busy during the COVID -19 pandemic.

“I’ve been into carpentry after the closure of gyms. I’ve been forced to make my own gym set with the help of my relatives,”he said.

“I barely passed woodwork in high school so I definitely needed help. “With the assistance of my cousins and nephews, we thought of a possibility of taking it to the next level and open up our own gym with the equipment we made or helping others setting up their own.

“The only thing that’s metal in the gym set is the weights. We’re going to see how the equipment holds up and whether or not we can improve on the design to make it more durable.”

Vollmer said discipline and patience required of being a carpenter has taught him a lot of lessons that can be useful in his preparations for future competitions.

“I'm enjoying it a lot because not only am I learning something new but how to really focus on the little details and do them well.

“Carpentry teaches you planning, proper execution on the little things and patience. Work on those very well and the project you're working on will turn out better than you expect.

“To all my fellow athletes out there, stay safe, practise good hygiene and take up a hobby and commit to it. Now is a good time to take up gardening, cooking, carpentry or reading.”

Future

“I’m looking forward to competing and training in Australia and hopefully in USA to get the ranking points for Tokyo Olympic Games next year.”
