‘A mother is love personified’

-

Greetings. n English poet, Robert Browning once said “all love begins and ends in motherhood. It is and will always remain one of the world’s rare truths; a mother is love personified.”

As we yet again honour motherhood and it’s essence in our own unique ways this Mother’s Day, I extend my heartfelt wishes to all mothers across Fiji. I pray that your hearts be filled with joy and your faces with smiles.

I wish to thank you for all that you have done for your families, your communities and by extension for Fiji, especially, in these unprecedented times of uncertainty and fear. This year, I especially acknowledge the role that mothers have taken up in the nation’s approach to combat COVID-19 and towards protecting not only their families and loved ones, but also fellow Fijians. I wish to, especially, convey my gratitude towards the mothers who served in essential services like health care, defense, markets, telecommunication, social services, supermarkets, and utility sectors amongst others as Fiji battled and continues to battle COVID-19 and the aftermath of TC Harold. We value the sacrifices these mothers have made in these testing times and commend their resilience.

I also commend the courage and strength that our mothers at home who have become bearers of many other roles – being protectors, providers, teachers, healers, friends and much more to ensure that our families remain positive and healthy. I want our mothers to know that you are deeply appreciated and your worth cannot be measured nor can your selflessness be repaid.

I also take a moment to say thank you to the women in our lives who love us in that same special way mothers do; grandmas, godmothers, friends, colleagues, aunts, sisters, and mentors - your hearts full of compassion, love and care has sustained us through difficult times.

Giving flowers and presents to our mothers is always a good idea. However, I hope that on this Mother’s Day, we will recommit ourselves to doing more than that. Through deeds that match our words, let’s give our mothers the respect they deserve, give all women the equality they deserve, the security they deserve, the love they deserve and the acknowledgement they deserve.

Let’s build a better and safer society for our mothers and women.

Once again wishing all mums a very blessed

Day.

Vinaka
