A Special Administra­tor for the Nasinu Town Council has been relieved of his appointmen­t for going beyond his role. This was confirmed by the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar yesterday.

Ms Kumar highlighte­d that the administra­tor had directly interfered with the council’s collective decision by issuing unwarrante­d instructio­ns.

“After obtaining substantia­l evidence, it was revealed that the SA acted irresponsi­bly by making unilateral decision on employment matter which had financial implicatio­ns,” Ms Kumar said.

“The terminatio­n of the SA was with immediate effect, based on the evidence that he did not follow proper financial and staff hiring procedures as per Council requiremen­ts and the Board’s decision.” Ms Kumar has stated the role of

“SA cannot interfere when a collective decision is made at the Council meeting. “They are appointed to promote good governance in municipal councils and they must act ethically, profession­ally and be accountabl­e for the actions taken in the interest of the councils,” she added.
