Serious crime
The Commissioner of Police, BrigadierGeneral Sitiveni Qiliho, has announced the drop in serious crimes for the month of April 2020 compared to figures of 2019 for the same period.
He has defined serious crimes: rapes, attempted rapes, defilement,, murder, aggravated robbery, and theft of motor vehicles. This is welcome news, but not wholly satisfactory.
It is significant that there was a drop of 13 per cent in crime against women and also a drop in crimes against children.
I wonder if this is a flow on effect of the lockdown conditions currently in force. But this is a good news all the same.
There has been a significant increase in crimes in the failure to observe curfew conditions. This is a sad reflection of the lackadaisical attitude of our people.
They must realise that the lockdown rules are enforced to ensure their safety and the health of the nation in fight against COVID-19.
Police deserve our thanks for a job well done.
