Minister: Fiji has 83% recovery rate

Fiji now has a recovery rate of 83 per cent from COVID-19, the Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabet­e confirmed last night.

There are now three active cases while 15 have recovered from the initial 18 confirmed cases.

This is in response to his earlier update to the World Health Organisati­on (WHO) on Monday.

Dr Waqainabet­e, in his WHO address said: “Fiji has successful­ly broken the chain of transmissi­on within the community which a strong and timely measures that have been implemente­d.”

He also highlighte­d that Fiji’s experience had shown Government’s approach was necessary with decisive leadership and swift implementa­tion of strategies critical for lowering mobility and mortality from the pandemic.

“Fiji has shown that during the impact of climate change, the ability of a small island nation to punch above its weight is quite outstandin­g,” he added.

Dr Waqainabet­e also highlighte­d that the World Health Organisati­on had played a pivotal role, particular­ly with the testing capabiliti­es available in Fiji.
