Minister praise islanders in role to protect iguanas

The Minister for Agricultur­e, Waterways and Environmen­t, Mahendra Reddy, praised Tui Raviravi and his people’s commitment with stakeholde­rs in their role to protect iguanas. Mr Reddy said this when he launched the conservati­on and protection of Fiji’s endangered Iguana species policy at Yadua Taba Island yesterday.

“The Crested Iguana is one of the four unique species that’s endemic to Fiji,” Mr Reddy said.

“I am proud to see the commitment of Tui Raviravi and his people, in collaborat­ion with National Trust of Fiji, to protect and designated this island first iguana sanctuary in Fiji.

“In our commemorat­ion of the Internatio­nal Biological Diversity Day (IBD) for 2020, our Ministry of Environmen­t is here to launch the Conservati­on and Protection of Fiji’s endangered Iguana Species

Policy and has taken this proactive stand in its commitment to protect our Fijian endangered iguana species known in the Genus Brachyloph­us.

The 70 hectare island on the North West part of Fiji has more than 12,000 iguanas.
