Man in court for allegedly posting false info about 2018 polls online

Aman alleged to have posted false informatio­n online about the 2018 General Election appeared in the Suva Magistrate­s Court yesterday.

The accused Vijay Krishna is charged by the Fiji Independen­t Commission Against Corruption with one count of making a false statement under the Political Parties Act of 2013.

It is alleged that he published false informatio­n on Facebook relating to the 2018 General Election, which he knew to be false or had no reason to believe as true.

First phase disclosure­s were filed and served to the accused, and FICAC prosecutor, Josann Pene, said second phase disclosure­s would be served in due time.

Krishna was released on $500 bail bond with a surety who was bonded for the same amount.

He was ordered by Magistrate Joseph Daurewa not to interfere with the FICAC witnesses, to surrender his travel documents to the court and not to reoffend whilst out on bail.

The accused was instructed to temporaril­y deactivate his Facebook account and all his social media accounts on any online platform and to provide proof of the same to the court by May 29. Furthermor­e, Magistrate Daurewa ordered him to report to the FICAC office every Friday between 8am and 4pm.

A stop departure order has also been issued against him.

The case has been adjourned to July 15 for mention.
