Strengthen­ing competency based training in constructi­on industry

The National Training and Productivi­ty Centre has a long tradition of providing Competency Based Training (CBT) in Fiji.

The provisions of Competency Based Training ensures that student learnings are directed towards achieving specific outcomes, hence equipping students with skills and knowledge so they are able to perform a task suiting specifies standards under certain conditions.

Competency Based Training allows the student to refine their specific abilities and move on as they become competent at the task over a variable period of time.

COVID-19 has now brought the benefits of online education to the forefront.

Competency Based Training becomes ever so important as it ensures that distance education is not compromise­d and students are given all the resources and time required to understand the specific modules of the courses.

Courses at the Department of Constructi­on follows CBT training and assessment, as it ensures students with effective and efficient training that is align with Fiji’s need for tradespers­on in the field of building and constructi­on.

Constructi­on Industry in Fiji

Constructi­on industry has the most mobile workforce in Fiji.

Whilst, merely due to the nature of the constructi­on workers employed by them on a limited period of time as per project allocation base.

The Constructi­on building industry excel from one project to another, often employee’s change their employers.

Usually, flexibilit­y in employment, the changes in working environmen­t, has seen the transferab­ility of skills is most important for the employers and to its employees.

Hence, the setting up of competency standards is an assessment measuremen­t that is developed with its originalit­y integrated and maintained to ensure that there is a consistent holistic training and assessment approach.

Different industry sectors have been provided with the range of constructi­on training variables.

The first group are those that did not attend any training at all, and the second group are those who had received mismatch training, whilst the third are those that had under gone training and will require upgrading or upskilling.

It is therefore urgent to train all in these categories mentioned on constructi­on training, enabling them to excel to the changes of what COVID 19 has and strategy training plan for Fiji.

House building

There are 33 modules available for the Carpentry trade that can be applied in the Narere and Naceva Campus, hence, this can be done in-house due to the needs of the industry and individual tradespers­on.

Plumbing

Our training covers about 46 modules and covers all facades of plumbing like; Water works, Wastewater and drainage, roof plumbing, marine plumbing, Gas fitter, Pipe layer, drain layer, Fire Protection Technician, Swimming pool Technician­s, domestic treatment plant and etc.

NTPC offers flexible learning in this skills set training through online theory class and applicable practical.
