ANew Zealand, who wishes to remain anonymous, has assisted players of the Lautoka rugby team.

Team manager Joseph Sikuri said the New Zealander assisted the many Maroons who were affected by COVID-19 pandemic. Sikuri said most of the players were working in the tourism industry and Fiji Sugar Corporation. “A businesswoman in New Zealand provided food vouchers worth $130 each to the different players who were immensely affected by the pandemic,” he said. “We chose the players according to how they were managing at home. Some were sole bread winners and staring a family.” He said 30 players are in the senior team and about 15 players had already been assisted.

“Most of these players were just surviving on food from their backyard gardens,” he added.

Sikuri said they acknowledged the kind assistance rendered by the woman.

“I want to thank our Maorian friend, her assistance to the players is huge and it means a lot,” said Sikuri
