An official statement of the July 11 boxing programme at the AD Patel College ground in Ba will be issued next week, says the promoter.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday South Pacific Boxing Programme promoter Fredy Chand indicated that he had received a lot of calls from boxers who want to be part of the July 11 promotion.

“Right now we’re all still waiting for Government’s clearance on this COVID-19 pandemic restrictions,” he said.

“We will only proceed with our work once we’re given the green light.”

Chand also indicated that they are discussing with their directors about the promotion.

“There are issues we’re going to face like getting in an overseas boxer who needs to go through the 28-day isolation.

“This is what we’ve been discussing with the directors and we’ll issue an official statement next week as we also need to consult the Boxing Commission of Fiji.” The promotion’s main bout was for Fijian light heavyweight champion Savenaca Naliva to fight for an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) title.

The main supporting bout is for the vacant Fijian heavyweight title between favourite James Singh against Jonasa Kavika.

Meanwhile, there have been a lot of interest in the sport within the Ba area.

Chand said they have now supported the formation of two more boxing clubs. “They are the Varavu Boxing Club which is close to Nailaga Village and the Wailagi Boxing Club,” Chand said.

“We’ve donated punching bags to the clubs but at the same time we’ve told them to follow all health restrictions by Government.”

He highlighted that earlier this year they helped establish the Tarivo Boxing Club in the interior of Ba.
