What do you think of $30m to help jobless?

- – Compiled by Shratika Naidu, Waisea Nasokia, Salote Qalubau and Inoke Rabonu

The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum announced fortnightly assistance for those who were made unemployed because of the COVID-19 crisis. $30 million has been set aside for that. What do you think of this and how will this assist those in need?

Mesulame Beni, Tailevu

The assistance by the Government is timely because by now the first phase of assistance would have dried up. There are many other people who have lost their jobs just recently and this assistance could be used as starting capital to at least generate some home-based businesses that could help with their day-to-day living.

Kelemeni Rokotala, Labasa

I think it is a good initiative taken up by the Government. This will assist them in their daily needs.

Anatoki Udite, Rakiraki, Ra

It is good for Government to assist those who are in need to put food on the table. It will assist families greatly.

Hemant Kumar, Lautoka

It’s good because they have to support their families as well.

Kunal Bali, Narere

It will be of good assistance because people could use this financial assistance for their family needs. Families are in need of basic food items, bills to pay and needs to meet, this could help as long as it is not abused.

Salanieta Rokotala, Labasa

Government is really doing a great job because it is them who have to look after the people of Fiji.

Tazmeen Nisha, Lautoka

It is very good news for those in need to be supported by this initiative during this crucial time in our lives.

Ajnesh Raju, Lautoka

I think that it is really good, especially for those with only one person working in the family.

Peter Kiviwa, Suva

I believe it is a good idea because it is very much needed in the country. There are people still without jobs and it looks like that many will be without jobs in the near future. It’s also time people learn to spend wisely and be innovative.

Emele Diwaqa, Savusavu

I think this is a great way to help those who have lost their jobs during this virus outbreak. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that these people are to be reconsidered when everything goes back to normal.

Mohammed Sattar, Nadi

Good to see that the Government of Fiji is doing something to assist those who are in need.

Avikash Kumar, Lautoka

It’s really good, in my opinion.

Epeli Waqanibaravi, Nasinu

I believe it is a good idea. Many people will benefit from this assistance to help their families get through these hard times that we are currently in.

Newal Dutt, Labasa

It is a good initiative taken up by the Government as long as food is on everyone’s table and other basic needs.

Salome Vakayadra, Kadavu

This is good news and should be welcomed.

Aman Vicky Kumar, Lautoka

I think it is awesome and it should be divided for everyone and not just the unemployed because the truth is, everybody is affected.

Miriama Fong, Valelevu

That’s awesome because people are struggling to provide for their families. It will really help those in need. Honestly speaking, that’s much better than for the Government to deal with robberies later as a result of unemployment.

Satendra Gounden, Labasa

Government has made a wonderful decision, thinking about the unemployed. Only God knows what they are facing right now.

Muni Nadan, Lautoka

A lot of people are without jobs, but we as taxi drivers have a job yet we are suffering and can’t get that assistance even though our jobs are legal.

Ratu Semi Vatu, Nadi

I think Government should do its very best to help Fijians affected by COVID-19. Many are unemployed and they have families to feed.
