The Greater Good Foundation animal welfare officer, Maleeka Buksh, said the animal sanctuary was offering a $2000 reward for anyone with information regarding the injury of dogs allegedly used for pig hunting.

The Greater Good Foundation is located in Tavarau, Ba.

Ms Buksh said recently a dog named Jordan was brought in with part of his face mutilated, however, she said that Jordan had to be euthanised after eight days because of the extent of his injuries.

“His ears and tail were cut off the way it is typically done to pig hunting dogs, but also his face was off,” she said.

“No one has come forward so far but unfortunately this case did not get any media attention, if we can get the case better known then we can hope for help to find the criminal that did this to Jordan.”

She said much of the awareness on animal cruelty was done through the Greater Good Foundation’s social media platforms.

“We try to remind people about what is happening in these villages and advise them not to give their dogs to strangers,” she said.

“When people call or write to report an unwanted dog, we educate them about the abuse in these villagers and plead with them not to give dogs to the villagers that come around asking for dogs.”

She said awareness was also being done on dog theft.

“We have intercepted many of these thieves stealing dogs especially around the Ba and Nadi markets,” she said.
